Support Their Professional Development

When employees come to you and tell you they want to learn something job or industry-related, find a way to help make it happen.

If there’s a conference for which you have budgeted, send them. If there’s a certificate program they need to further their skills, sign them up.

Responsibility lies with you, as the manager, to follow up on each employee’s learning. I have seen many professionals go to a conference where all they care about is where to have dinner! Set an expectation. Have the employee go through the program’s itinerary ahead of time and set some goals.

Schedule a follow up meeting for after the event to talk with them about what they learned and how they will apply it. Follow up is key.
