Give Feedback Often

 

Surprises are for birthday parties.

Don’t make the performance appraisal a surprise for anyone. Feedback needs to happen all year and that means both positive, reinforcing feedback, and constructive feedback for change.
 

Early in my career as a manager my director once said to me, “The only time your people hear from you is when they do something wrong.” Ouch. I never forgot it. I now praise as much as I offer critique.
